AOL Search allows its members to search across both, the web and AOL's own content from one place, while the non member version does not list AOL content.

AOL (America Online), Google and DMOZ

Natural and sponsored search results for AOL are provided by Google Search, while the main directory results come from DMOZ, which is also owned by AOL. When there are no available results from one of these results providers, AOL receives secondary search results from Inktomi.

AOL Search Results

AOL takes Google's site listings and then uses their own algorithm to reorder the search results, and uses Google's Adwords product for sponsored entries. Although the top 25 search results with AOL will generally be pretty similar to Google, you can't assume it because AOL will sometimes throw in a listing or two of their own into the mix.

AOL Submission and URL Listing

AOL does not have an add URL page of it's own. You must submit to Google if you want to be listed with AOL.

Add your site to the AOL Search Hierarchical Web Directory. If you're not already in DMOZ, or if your site is currently listed in the AOL directory and you wish to update it, this is where you go.

Note that if your site is accepted, it will also appear on other sites that use the Open Directory, such as Netscape, Lycos and Hotbot, as well as within AOL Search.

Use a similar method as you would with Google
Do not spam your title and meta tags
Do not spam your page title tags
Have high quality content on your site
Use industry appropriate keyword density
Make sure your site is finished and optimized before submission

The thing to remember with AOL Search Directory is to use keywords in the title and meta tags, have high quality content, use high keyword density, and make sure your site is optimized before submission. As with most search engines, submission alone doesn't guarantee good positioning.
